The Discussion
One thing that tends to be neglected from (historical) interactions between black and white people have been the bad habits we got from white people. History shows that white man always cherished money, power, and dominance of women. Check that history. I have always felt black people (men in particular) unfortunately took up the same attitude. Slowly over time, it has begun to manifest itself more visually b/c we have had more opportunity to attain money (which is power).
I pride myself on being able to see the world with different sets of goggles (black & white, rich & poor, blacks & niggazs etc). Putting these on right now, the whole "black vs niggas" thing is as legitimate today as it was when Chris Rock said it years ago. Honestly, it is way more complex than that. Many of us intentionally hop back & forth across the line. It is cool to be a nigga at the club, but I'll be black on the weekdays. Look at our entertainers. I'm a proud, educated black man but put some money in my face and I'll play an ignorant negro like it was my life's purpose. Then, consider that we're all mixed in together. You have a degree that will get you a career and your brother is a gangster who doesn't take care of his children. It is a sensitive subject cause it more than likely hits home with all people of color. Can you be both? Should we allow someone to play the field? It seems that we do. Rappers say some pretty offensive & unintelligent things (not that they are the only ones) but then we will ask for their opinion on politics. Why?
Reality checks are needed for everyone. No group of people are less in need of it. I would like to see poor people (especially blacks) become more honest with themself on how their circumstances got in such a way. Before you blame "the system" [which is a big issue], consider looking at your mother who had you at 16 with a guy who wasn't worth much when she had unprotected sex with him. In black culture, we love our mothers dearly but a lot of issues people have their circumstance can be put on the shoulders of their mother. I am not saying that crappy fathers don't share responsibility but if he had nothing going for him before having a child, then having a child is highly unlikely to change that and for some reason you had a baby with him.
Before I would ever defend the criticism that falls upon poor black folks, I must note that it is black people who are left to defend them against the world and shoulder the responsibility of their actions. If a nigga do something bad, the consequences don't hurt him b/c he essentially wasn't going anywhere with his life. But, when a black person tries to move forward, we have to answer for the actions of the aforementioned nigga. A crazy thing about "the black experience" is that you cannot escape being connected by your actions or the actions of others....MJ tried but soon as he got accused of touching a kid, he was brought back to the club.
I wish Rico didn't have (or what seems to be) this generalized perception that the black middle class has a certain attitude. I am lower middle class the majority of my life. I've lived poorer than a lot of poor people to keep the same roof over our head. But focusing myself, the middle class is a very very scattered group of people. A certain portion having been the generation in their family that stepped above poverty into the stability associated with being middle class. I would
definitely appreciate a more detailed looked into your experiences with black people at Emory. I have had some very interesting ones myself and would like to compare.
p.s. I apologize for scattered thoughts.
The War Among My (black) People
Rico's comment was the motivation for this post so (if he's up for it), let's attempt to shed light on somethings mentioned above. Why not? We're grown, we're mature. My mind is still developing how to set this up but I think I will start with offering a general description of my own personal background (focusing on socioeconomical conditions) because that heavily influences your perspective on things.

The Great Gates Debate

And for national news...racial profiling or a police officer doing his job?
So I am sure you all have heard about this Gates faceoff that happened last week and for those who haven't the basic rundown is that: A phonecall was made to the police about a potential breakin. It turns out that this was the home of Professor Henry Gates, an African American Harvard professor and it was him who was breaking into his own home after finding the frontdoor jammed when he returned from a trip to China. The white police officer commenced to approach Mr. Gates, who then began yelling because they were questioning him about breaking into his own home and the police proceeded to arrest him saying that he acted belligerently. The police officer has been accused of racial profiling in unnecesarily taking the situation all the way to an arrest. Yet the police officer does not think he did anything wrong and was merely doing his job.
The whole thing really came to a head when Obama stated that the police officer "acted stupidly" by arresting Mr. Gates. So what do you think? Was the officer right in making the arrest because Mr. Gates was upset and yelling or should he have let it go, given there was clearly no illegal breakin going on? In other words...is this another case of racial profiling or was the police officer acting in accordance with the law?
Half of a Brain?
So for you science buffs out there and future healthcare professionals, here is an interesting article on a girl with half of a brain who is perfectly functional. I didn't expect this to be my first post but I think the human body is amazing in its ability to adapt, evolve, and heal. Take a look...the link to the article is at the bottom.Girl Sees Fine With Half a Brain
posted: 27 July 2009 10:11 am ET
Now, scientists have figured out why. The girl's brain rewired itself — likely in the womb — so that it's able to process information from both the right and left fields of vision even though she is missing the right brain hemisphere, which failed to develop while she was in the womb.
The child's case is the only one of its kind known in the world, researchers said.

People/Professors who Care...MATTER
Soo...As some of you may or may not know/have realized...I've been kinda stressing for the past few months [since even before graduation or..well maybe even since last summer...] Anyway, some people have a way with words. There comes a point in everyone's life when they need help making decisions and a push in the right direction. Your true friends are constantly there to provide you with the assistance you need. From experience I know that Geden doesn't beat around the bush . You lay out your story/problem, he'll give your a straight answer/suggestion and won't just leave you with the generic "It's up to you" answer [THANK YOU].Everyone of us has his/her own style of 'advice giving' but to me, I think it is AWESOME when you have reached such a level of trust/mentor-mentee relationship with a PROFESSOR that you practically consider them one of your own friends. Luckily I have this type of relationship with 3 professors I took classes with at Emory. Below is a message (slightly edited for the sake of some anonymity) just sent to me by one of these professors [because I've been stressing to all 3 of these professors]. I just wanted to share this with you and really get you all to think about how important such relationships are. And also so that we can all learn from each others experiences. Friends are great, but I think an older, wiser, more experienced person treating you kind of like a friend is a very good/healthy thing to have in your life. It rounds out the whole deal and gives you a more well-rounded support system in my opinion.
"The bottom line is that your future consideration for admission to medical school will depend considerably on how much you can improve your MCAT, as well on some demonstration of continued commitment to becoming a doctor. Neither of your two plans will matter if your MCAT doesn't come up... I think medical schools would be happy with [a] postbac...if in the end your profile improves. The same is true if you were to go back to FL to take courses and then retake the MCAT and improve significantly. So from my perspective it is really up to you what you do, and I would select the path that you are most interested in following, because only then do you have a chance of demonstrating your commitment while optimizing your profile on paper. Any one would be impressed with your enthusiasm, dedication and motivation, so if you can bring up your MCAT that will help enormously. You know what you have to do!! And I am there to cheer you on.
All the best,
[professor X]"

Summer Blues!!
Today we were giving a day off from school for an Independent Study Day. So I think it is about time for another session of Deep Blue G. :) So the last couple of weeks of school have been very exciting. During the past section in class I have been able to hold a lung, a heart, and a brain in my hand. I think I was mostly excited about the brain, I think I held that for about 10 minutes telling other students stupid jokes like "I have a the knowledge I need in one hand". LOL... During this class I have been very excited about meeting new people. As I get to know people I realize that even though they are cool people I don't think any of them can truly replace or supplement the love and friendship I have made at Emory. I don't think I can find people like Travis, Rico, Givi, and Rafeal that I can talk to about almost anything or just hang out with and do stupid stuff. I do have one friend name Brett that is pretty cool and me and him hang out and I have my friend Thad, who I have been great friends with since 9th grade, But with me being at school most of the time plus the fact that he now lives with his girlfriend and she takes up most of his time so I don't really get to hang out with him that much. On the other hand I am beginning to see that finding people like Milla, Rho, Paulee', Anni,Ashley C, Funi, Zeta Yaz, Jenelle are near impossible on the graduate level. People have some much going on in their lives that I never get to hang out with people like I did at Emory. So I during my free time and before I go to sleep I usually call some friends to see what they are up to or just think about old times that I have been through. (I will soon be using my DB G section to talk about my memories of everyone individually and first encounters). Just this week I was thinking about interactions that I had with Laretia, Rachel, Brandon and Delon. I have come to realize that unlike at Emory not many people understand me. Not many people understand my emotional disconnect facade that I present. But sometimes I do wish I had pack a couple of people in my luggage when I left Atlanta and brought them here with me. But I guess I will just have to make a greater effort calling people now. Outside of school I really just spend time out on Saturday with the Youth from church and that is the extent to my social life. I really find it difficult to build a social aspect,to what I am accustomed, in Med school. Brett and I have decided that during the Fall that me and him will take a walk over to the Law school and see if can find some interesting girls to hang out with. Malpractice insurance is high nowadays, gotta find a way to take care of it. LOL.. I am hoping that Fall semester is better since there will be more people here. I also been looking forward for calls and text from my friends but no missed calls as of yet. Things should be looking up soon, I hope. Gotta find a social life outside of Med School. G out... Back to the Books
The Response...

...to things posted on the blog (as well as me hitting on anything that comes to me).
Hearing how well G is doing in school makes me wonder just how well I will do. It is really hard to predict. I sucked on science tests my 1st couple of yrs at Emory then started doing pretty good in science classes that were focused on particular aspects of a certain science. Hmmm, I have no doubt that I will spend the necessary time in the library, but will I be able to translate what I learn onto an exam when the time comes. I don't want to repeat my Emory academic experience...meaning that I do not wish to start bad then steadily improve. I desire to be at the top from the beginning. Especially if I do decide to pursue anything related to orthopedics, very competitive field (possibly the most). Or, maybe I will specialize on the chest & heard and practice overseas.
The best thing about success is that it is defined by each individual. There is nothing wrong with putting your goals high in the sky, but there is also nothing wrong with bringing them down a little. I understand the value of stability...pay check to pay check is nerve wrecking (unless that is the normal situation in the surrounding environment, which is was not for me). Pursue a certain level of stability but see it as only a stable platform for you to jump off of when aiming for those dreams that are floating around in the sky. As far as finding yourself, maybe try this position. If you were able to locate yourself exactly, it might imply that you are standing still, stagnant. Maybe just try to find the path that you are moving on. Step outside of yourself (mentally) and look ahead to where that path is leading you. If it does not satisfy your expectation, then change direction (physically).
Now I have a request. If you want to know how someone is doing, ask them 1st before directing that question towards me. I write this not to be rude or passive aggressive, just to make a point. If you want to know how someone is doing, why haven't you taken the opportunity to reach out to them on your own? If you ask me before even sending them a FB message/wall post or email, my natural thought process has me think that you have questionable interest in the person or want to know something about the person that they themself would not share with you. Oops, too much thought on this. Moving on...
I think that I might be one of those people who if they think hard enough on something, they will find a flaw. I am definitely having a difficult time in regard to a person's actions versus what they have spoken. I always try to coincide my actions with my words and a close friends does not appear to be doing so which bothers me. I can't tell him or her what to do with their time & money but it bothers me when I....(sucks to say this)...feel a little cheated. I apologize for the lack of specificity. My advice for myself is to watch what you do for others, even ones that you trust. Also, make sure to do things for the right reasons cause people can make you rethink what you have done or are doing for them.

Treize and Truth Vol. 8-Finding Me

Finding Me
Greetings people-here we are, more free thoughts....
Lately I've been trying to understand what the hell it is I'm supposed to be doing--what do I want and need to do? Not being a particularly religious man, this question has proved difficult to solve on my own but I feel up to the challenge. As I've said time and time again, I have a mandate to succeed and I will not fail...no matter the circumstances.
Some observations on my journey....
1) I'm starting to see the effects of growing up in a culture that sees income and a job as interchangeable with the concept of a career. I currently have a job where I rack up full time hours sitting in the "comfort" of home. Yet, I'm finding it difficult to transition into laying down some long term plans. Coming up, the final stop for most of my folks was stability, anything that got the bills paid constituted your position. Working paycheck to paycheck, paying rent and the water bill were for the most part the most important things in life. I never thought I viewed life that way and have made attempts since leaving home to figure out what it was I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing.
Only thing is, somewhere along the road, I totally lost all understanding of what to do with my life and have fallen back into the mentality that stability is indeed success. But can you blame me? My life thus far has been defined by tragedy and drama--one mishap to the next, seesawing between pulling myself up after bad decisions and doing everything I can to make sure I stay afloat and avoid catastrophe....What a horrible way to live. I can see now that because I've found stability in my job and "home" and have distanced myself from family, in my mind, there is nothing of immediate concern. This is obviously far from reality.
At various points in my life, one thing or another was supposedly providing direction. Whether it be myself, God, Emory, a mentor here and there, perhaps someone I perceived as a friend, all have somehow provided me with a goal at some point. However, all those things have gone by the wayside--fallen victim to dismissal and the general belief on my part that their premises for success were incorrect. So then I was left with dreams. Dreams of fame and fortune, dreams of my passions for writing and acting, dreams that suffer each day from the Realist stream of thought. Realistically, can I rely on writing a bestseller anytime soon? Becoming an actor or famed businessman, when I simply don't have the discipline or the direction to know what or how to pursue these dreams? All I have is a job. So these days I sit and ponder, it is awfully difficult not to be discouraged.
2) So at some level, defining my identity and surrounding myself with like minds becomes a priority. No one can survive alone. I have chosen to educate myself in various areas of interest. Barnes and Noble is my new best friend. Things like attaining financial stability, starting a business, actually beginning a novel occupy my time. Consider it my latest attempt at "doing something." Because nothing does indeed beget nothing. But interestingly enough, finding those like minds to be around has proved difficult. I am a firm believer that life is based in interactions. The ability to communicate with others cannot be understated. One's social existence to a large extent creates the opportunities and relationships that blossom over a lifetime. But much to my dismay, I find I'm not really a people person at all. For some reason I cannot apply the principles and lessons I've gained during my tumultuous life. I don't understand what it means to be myself around others because I don't know who the hell I am. And so I become the hated many, the perpetrating people who front and become something they wish they to be, not who they really are. I would rather rot than put on a show so people will like me. Fuck that.
So lately my interactions have been reduced to impromptu smoking sessions and fabricated relationship interests. The latter proving to be the most frustrating of all. Nothing annoys me more than my troubles with the opposite sex. Short of my ex-girlfriend/best friend/female roommate situation, my interactions with women are unnecessarily dramatic, punishingly confusing, and purposeless. Women are interesting. I would think they prefer genuineness and scoff at superficial efforts to woo them, but this does not, at least in my estimation seem to be the case. They seem less responsive to actual efforts to know them and are more concerned with my choice of pitch. Isn't that asking for a lackluster conversation? I guess that's another blog entry for another day. At least the drugs are entertaining, exercising my creative inclinations and so far apparently my negotiating skills. Two times in a row, the influence of drugs has gotten me either a raise or a promotion. Don't ask how because I couldn't tell you. Perhaps only then am I able to be myself without worry for other people and consequently things get done and I'm motivated. I came up with an idea for a book and am currently in the process of shaping it. Who knows maybe something will come of it.

3) I say all these things about what's going on in my life to make a single point. The pressure of
finding oneself and defining identity is directly proportional to your ability to perceive things as you want them to be. If you view yourself not in the context of the world, but in the context of your innermost desires, the behaviors you exhibit will be more authentic, more real. However, this differs from manipulating your actions for the purpose of manipulating others and portraying a certain image. This in essence is letting the world define you. So it is in your best interest to understand who you are and where your commitments lie. If you have the benefit of religion, many of the principles relating to self perception are laid out already. If not, then you'll come to realize the challenge of understanding your heart is something important and difficult enough to consider divine. Interactions are the basis for productivity in the real world, but they are not the source of information relating to your identity. Interactions should be a product of the output of "authentic self". Then and only then will you be able to accurately gauge your and others' interest in you. From there, you form true connections. When you understand yourself and what it is you truly embody, everything else will fall into place. That includes your dreams, love, career and purpose............Now if only I could practice what I preach. *Sigh*
Random Question of the Day--Is perception reality? If not, what is reality if in and of itself, it seems to possess no meaning beyond what we perceive to be?

Week 42
We finally started working on the final project. We have to have a draft on Wednesday. The actuall presentation will be on Aug. 8th I think. I think we'll do well. Professor invited somoene from the ministry of economy and there's a chance for news reporters to be there as well. So much pressure... oh, boy. lol, I don't care but some people got tense when they heard the news. It'll be ok. I can get through 30 minutes of a presentation. I'll be glad to because after that I'm free from college. On Monday we had a meeting with the lady who made the actual project we based ours on. She was strange but gave some helpful information and that's what matters.
Things at work are going well but at the expense of a lot of pressure... as in I make guarantees that have to be delivered and might not always be in my hands. So far so good though.
I've had a few problems with breathing and pain around my heart this week again but they were mild. Things are improving.
Skype was in full effect this week as well. I'd have no communication with people without it. I don't mean in general, I mean right now. I don't strive to see people and hang out... there are a few exceptions of course. Nevena got a skype phone which made her easier to catch. She's the one who called actually. We even called Geden who (of course) was in class. Somehow, the whole class heard me on skype while the laptop was on mute. Nevena and I talked about me going to Serbia which turned out to a little complicated. I can't get a visa in Georgia.
One of the hidden posts got me in trouble :)
I talked to my friend who's done with school next Saturday. Me made party plans. I'm going nuts as soon as I'm done!
I went to visit my grandma yesterday. I hadn't been there in a while. My uncle was there too but left soon. She was happy to see me. We went throught some old pictures, I reminded her of a song she used to sing for me when I was little... it felt good. I should do that often. it's not an easy task though.
I recorded last night, then finished another song and recorded today. My EP is almost done but... I'll probably make it longer which means it's not coming yet.
I definitely texted too much today... but I was bored.
5 days left till August... I haven't heard any new material from anyone. smh. I'm positive though. Screw the time pressure.
I really enjoed the Felipecha album I posted somewhere below. Who knew that I would like that type of music?.. you never know. Unlike some people I don't hesitate to go out of my zone and listen to whatever sounds good at that particulat moment.
people who were gone with or without a trace are back so... welcome back. I missed you.

one more...
... before I go. This one was on the sidebar and I think it's just good enough to be posted. hillarious.
Felipecha - De Fil En Aiguille
I heard her on the Wax Tailor record first and I decided to see what else she could offer. Charlotte Savary participates in different projects from trip-hop to folk. I decided to get the latest first and then check for other collaborations with Wax Tailor... Anyways, get this if you don't have problem with listening to french alternative/folk/soft-rock/"who-cares-about-the-genre" music. When you do get it... check the post below :)

Free Flowin Fridayz (Week 17)
The Bronx Zoo and the Empire State Building were pretty cool. Stay tuned for Princess Chronicle updates in pics/videos :)Soo the trip to the Zoo was an interesting one and really hit me in a strange way. Obviously being Emory Grads we hear about the huge socioeconomic divides in the world. I've seen it before, yeah. But going through the Bronx...I dunno. It really just got to me. All I could think of was WHY? WHY WHY WHY can one community be so poor and struggling when a community nearby-Manhattan is thriving and rich-Why? I myself do not have an answer, but I also disagree with those who blame this situation on the people themselves. I mean come on...when-in a whole span of 3 miles or more- I see maybe 1 white person and everyone else is Black, Hispanic and a few Asians...this little red alarm goes off in my head. Why? I mean if anything, don't generalize and say well these people have brought this situation upon themselves. No in an ideal world poverty would not be an issue. In Utopia everyone would help each other out. However, humans are inherently a selfish race and those few of us who have unselfish tendencies cannot make up for the rest. It just baffles me. Why? Just why? Why do we get to go to Emory while some of these kids will never be able to go to college? I just wish their were an answer or a way to fix it. But alas there is never a magical fix to such things.

Eyedea and Abilities - By The Throat
I posted their performance recently and now the album is out. I need to check their previous two albums. I'm impressed with this one, the lyrics, delivery and the music are tied together very well. Favorite track is Smile. Great song. I can relate to this album. One word to describe it would be "crazy" and I mean it.
one more thing, I'm amazed with how good abilities is with turntables.

“ As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn’t supposed to ever let us down, probably will. You’ll have your heart broken and you’ll break others’ hearts. You’ll fight with your best friend or maybe even fall in love with them, and you’ll cry because time is flying by. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, forgive freely, and love like you’ve never been hurt. Life comes with no guarantees, no time outs, no second chances. you just have to live life to the fullest, tell someone what they mean to you and tell someone off, speak out, dance in the pouring rain, hold someone’s hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up, stay up late, be a flirt, and smile until your face hurts. Don’t be afraid to take chances or fall in love and most of all, live in the moment because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back. "

Med Status (Week 8)
So it has been awhile since my last post. But, now since my schedule has been adjusted a little I should be able to get back to my blogging ways. (If I ever had any :)) So I have been in school for 8 weeks now and it is pretty cool. Over the past 8 weeks I have gotten the chance to meet a variety of different people. I can honestly say that Med School is filled with a lot of interesting people that you will either like or not pay any attention to. For example for our quiz we take a individual written part (25 questions) and then we take a group (teams of 6) practicals (50 questions). The practical part for the quiz are pictures of different structures that we have dissected in lab and as a group we have to be able to work together and correctly identify them. This is cool but it dosen't always work out with some people. But during the quiz one girl told my friend that was in her group that "She should of studied more" which almost got her cursed out in the middle of a test. So this sound fun but it can turn nasty pretty quickly since everyone dosen't always agree. But, i usually do good on my quizzes my first quiz i got an 88% then on the second quiz i got an 97%. But, my third and final quiz is next week. On another note the Exams are quite similar but the written has 60 questions and the practicals are taken individually and have 60 questions. This time the practical is taken downstairs in the lab. Here the TA's go around and tag 2 things on each body and we all start at different numbers then after a minute the bell rings and we move to the next number. Ten of these questions are Radiology questions which we have to go into a dark room to look at. But, it is pretty cool. On my first test I got a B and on the second test that I took yesterday I just found out that I got an A. Test bring out the worst in people. Over the days coming up to the test I have seen people break down in tears and constant calls to love ones. Overall, I have been able to maintain my cool around here because everybody stresses themselves out over everything. Especially since grades come out the same day at 5:00pm no matter what. The funniest part about Med School so far is the giant shift before and after test. Before test everyone is stressed out then after the test people go striagth to the bar. Med Students are all alcoholics. They get totally wasted after every test. Which is funny since our last couple of test have been on Thursdays and Monday and we have to be in class the next day. But, they totally don't care!! But, I have to go to Lab now so I will continue this on Thursday..............Peace, Love and Formaldehyde
