Illusion of Forgiveness, Reality of a Lesson Learned
Thoughts and Dreams
In a world where everyone is fighting and struggling to maintain sanity, it is essential that we all understand the importance of maturity and growth. I, for a very long time didn't understand these two things in terms of what they meant in everyday life. Is it making the most of your abilities and talents? Being nice to everyone no matter what they do to you? Having many different perspectives on life? Learning to handle both positive and negative attention? I just didn't know.
What I've come to realize is that maturity isn't a simple concept and as you may have guessed, it's a mixture of all the things mentioned above. But what I've figured out tonight is that maturity is marked by progression. A natural, real one much like the progression I spoke of in an earlier note , but a less specific kind. The kind I am speaking of relates to the most important aspect of life-our interactions with each other. Maturity is positive progression in our interactions with our past, present, and future
The most obvious mark of immaturity is a grudge. It is the type of thing that not only bothers you but keeps you from moving forward. The trouble it takes to hold a grudge is the stuff of legends. Never letting go of the past and being bound by it can destroy any and every attempt at success. It can cause your mind to deteriorate and your trust in people to slowly drift away. It eats at your heart and soon you find yourself caught up in the void between good and evil, being nice and being an asshole, success and failure, and ultimately being godly and ungodly. It is the connection between love and hate.
And that realization brings me to what true maturity is in my opinion. Besides being smart and perceptive, it's the ability to move on from the past. It's embracing the problems you face with positivity and being upfront about how you feel in any situation in a respectful and humanizing way. It is ridding yourself of all condescension, cleansing yourself of hate, and filling yourself with hope and optimism (realistically of course ; ) . These are the marks of maturity. The person who deals with their grudges towards life and all their tribulations without blaming, complaining, bashing, or rehashing is the most mature person of all. What made Jesus what he was, was his love towards his enemies and ultimately that is what pissed sinners off the most.
Not to say that I am now the most mature person of all or that I've even reached a point where I can't get any more mature, I'm simply saying I saw these qualities in another person tonight and my eyes were opened to what maturity actually looked like when it is at its best. A moment can go a long way and tonight a moment with the person I despised most has renewed and essentially created a new view of progression for me. There I sat in front of her, wondering what insults were about to come my way and I was humbled by an apology and a conversation showing interest in my life and a concern for how I felt about her. In that moment of humility, I respected her for being greater and stronger than I was to end what must have been the biggest feud I had ever shared with someone. In all my efforts to become a better person, I saw that the only way to do that was to be real with myself, the people around me, and rectify my past imperfections. Maturity is learning and dealing with the past that has shaped us. It's neither victory or defeat in any given scenario, it's heightened understanding and awareness.
Think about what grudges you may hold towards your family, your situation, your ex, your friends or whatever, and make a conscious decision to face them head on. Do away with petty concerns and thoughts of how the past has hurt you in an effort to move forward. Look them or it in the proverbial eye and say I forgive you. Apologize if you know you've done someone wrong. It is then that you'll be in the process of becoming the most mature person you can be. Be real with yourself and others. Until next time--be kool
